When Bibiana Ramirez first came to Health Services of North Texas, it was as a patient. As an immigrant and someone navigating the challenges of healthcare access, she experienced firsthand how vital HSNT’s services are to the community. That experience sparked a desire in her: to give back and help others have the same opportunity to receive quality care.
“I wanted to serve somehow for the community and help create a better experience in healthcare for all people,” Bibiana says. “I see the need in the community, so many don’t have insurance or medical coverage. I wanted to be part of making a difference.”
As a member of the HSNT Board of Directors, Bibiana brings a perspective shaped by her personal experiences. She knows what it means to sit on the other side of care and hopes to represent the voices of patients like her. “I hope my experience as a client and as an immigrant will put another perspective on the board, so we continue improving HSNT services,” she explains.
Her first board meeting left a strong impression. “Everyone was so welcoming and warm. Meeting everyone in person was incredibly productive. It felt like I was joining not just a board, but a family.”
Looking to the future, Bibiana sees HSNT growing alongside the community. “As the community keeps growing and HSNT faces new challenges, I believe HSNT will continue being a fundamental part of the community, meeting medical needs, and supporting all who need care,” she says. What excites her most is knowing that the most vulnerable have a place to go for quality healthcare. “It gives me hope that people can receive care without fear of being unable to pay for it.”
For Bibiana, the work of HSNT is deeply personal. She is especially moved by the care provided for patients with HIV and diabetes. “I am totally convinced that every human being has the right to receive quality medical care, no matter their race, socioeconomic status, religion, or culture,” she says. “HSNT is truly committed to that mission.”
Her passion for animals (especially horses and dogs) and her open-minded, lifelong love of learning bring warmth to her personality. She also credits HSNT CEO Doreen Rue and her fellow board members as mentors and role models. “Doreen has been working for years, growing HSNT for the community with integrity and commitment. And all the board members serve just for the sake of advocating for those in need. That inspires me.”
When asked how she would describe HSNT in just three words, Bibiana doesn’t hesitate: Advocate. Respect. Compassion.
And for those considering joining the HSNT board, her advice is simple: “You’ll be part of a group of people you can learn from while helping and supporting our community. It’s a chance to make a real difference.”
For Bibiana, joining the HSNT Board has been an incredibly rewarding. “I’m very happy I made the decision to join the board and have the opportunity to learn, to understand, and to help from my own perspective.”
