What are sick visits?
When your child is sick, the HSNT pediatric team is here for you. At Health Services of North Texas (HSNT), we have pediatric care in our Denton health centers, at our Plano facility, and at Wylie Children's Medical Clinic in Wylie, TX. Our on-site pediatricians and nurse practitioners are accepting new patients for sick visits. We can answer questions and help your child feel better again. There are many common childhood illnesses that babies, kids, and teens can contract. Not every illness can be treated at home. HSNT offers telehealth services if an office visit is not appropriate at this time.
Your child may have a cough, a lingering tummy ache, diarrhea, a sore throat, or a new rash that just keeps getting worse. With a fever over 101º F, this can cause any of these conditions to become critical. Dehydration can also be a factor that may warrant a trip to the emergency room. To see a pediatric provider for your child's acute illness, please call and make an appointment at HSNT.

Conditions We Treat in Sick Visits
There are many symptoms that your child may exhibit that need to be seen by a medical professional. Here are some of the symptoms your child may have and need to be seen in a sick visit:
When your child has a fever, it is a symptom of a bigger illness. A fever can indicate an infection, virus and/or other contagious illnesses.
Cough and/or sore throat
We can diagnose why your child has a cough and provide solutions to ease the pain it causes. A cough can be caused by more than the common cold. Your child could have allergies, acid reflux, an infection, or another undiagnosed medical condition. A sore throat may indicate an infection.
A painful stomachache that is accompanied by vomiting or diarrhea can really take its toll on your child's health. Stomach pain can be a symptom of another medical condition that needs to be checked out by a medical professional.
We offer testing here at HSNT in our own laboratory. In the event we need to do a swab test and culture of your child for the flu or strep throat, we can have the results back before you leave. This way, we can get you the medication you need faster, and your child can feel better sooner.
Sick visits through telehealth or in the clinic
If you feel that it is better to not go to a doctor's office with your sick child, please ask about our telehealth options for sick visits. We are offering telehealth services and e-sessions for sick visits at Health Services of North Texas.
For your child's sick visit, HSNT is going to great lengths to make sure you can come in safely. We will not unnecessarily expose your child to people experiencing contagious illnesses and other symptoms. We will have one provider designated for sick visits in a confined area of one of our health centers to control and limit exposure.
Sick Visits FAQ
How is a well-child visit different than a sick visit?
Well-child visits are regularly scheduled check-ups to maintain your child’s optimum health and monitor development. Sick visits are typically scheduled on short notice when your child is experiencing an illness or injury and needs to be diagnosed and treated quickly.
Do I need to schedule an office visit, or can I do a sick visit online?
At Health Services of North Texas, you can do both. We offer telehealth options for sick visits — so you can see one of our on-site pediatricians in a virtual visit if you prefer to not come to the office.
Does insurance cover sick visits?
Most insurance providers will cover doctor visits for children who are experiencing an acute illness. At Health Services of North Texas, we accept Medicaid, CHIP, and most medical insurance plans with a sliding fee scale for patients who are uninsured or underinsured.
