  • Allergies
  • Aches and pains
  • Common cold, fever, nasal congestion, cough
  • Changes in bowel movements
  • Heartburn (indigestion)
  • Insomnia
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Hemorrhoids

We can educate you on which over-the-counter medications are safe to take during your pregnancy to help you adjust to new symptoms as they arise.

What Are the Benefits of Prenatal Care?

The care you receive during your pregnancy greatly impacts your child’s early development and, potentially, their health for a lifetime. At Health Services of North Texas, we believe every expecting mother should receive a high level of prenatal care. Benefits of prenatal care provided at our Denton, TX facility include:

  • Treating common symptoms and issues with pregnancies
  • Comprehensive tests to ensure the health and development of your fetus
  • Regular checkups and visits during your pregnancy
  • Specialized care for high-risk pregnancies
  • Reducing the risk of complications for mother and child

Who is a candidate for prenatal care?

Any woman who is pregnant or thinks she may be expecting is considered a candidate for prenatal care, which is essential for the health and safety of both the mother and the baby throughout pregnancy. For women who are not yet pregnant but are hoping or planning to become pregnant, our caring team can also discuss pre-pregnancy care options to help prepare your body for pregnancy. Prenatal care, however, is reserved for patients who are currently pregnant. The earlier in the pregnancy a patient establishes a relationship with her prenatal care provider, the better. However, it is never too late to seek care for the health of yourself and your growing baby. Women who have certain known health conditions, have a history of a high-risk pregnancy or complex birth, and/or have other specific factors may require more specialized prenatal care and monitoring, which our team can discuss with you.

During Your Prenatal Visits

If you are visiting us for a possible pregnancy, we will perform pregnancy tests in-house for your convenience. You can also expect a more in-depth appointment if your test is positive — a physical examination, blood work, a medical history, a pelvic examination, and ultrasound as ordered by your Health Services of North Texas physician.

You will have multiple visits throughout the pregnancy, which will be determined by your physician. At each appointment, we will assess your health and check on your baby, too. We will listen to the heartbeat and do checkups and tests as needed. Women with a high-risk pregnancy will likely have more appointments with a shorter time between visits. Of course, your prenatal visits can also be the time to ask questions about any problems or concerns you have with your pregnancy. We are here to help you have a healthy pregnancy!

Prenatal Care FAQ

When should prenatal care begin?
If you didn’t consult with your physician prior to becoming pregnant, typically, the first of your prenatal visits should begin around eight weeks after your last menstrual period.

What is usually included in a prenatal care exam?
At Health Services of North Texas, a prenatal care visit typically includes:

  • Physical exam
  • Blood work
  • Medical history
  • Pelvic exam
  • Ultrasound

Your doctor will talk to you about your health, pregnancy, and any concerns you may have. If necessary, other tests and exams may be performed to ensure the health of you and your child.

Is prenatal care really necessary?
Babies born to mothers who don’t receive prenatal care are three times more likely to have a low birth weight and five times more likely to die than those born to mothers who receive regular prenatal care. The purpose of prenatal care is to ensure the health of both the mother and the child.

Do you take Chip Perinatal Texas & Medicaid?
Yes, HSNT gladly accepts approved Chip Perinatal Texas & Medicaid.

Pregnant women might be able to get free health coverage during their pregnancy through Medicaid for Pregnant Women or the CHIP Perinatal program.

Medicaid provides health coverage to low-income pregnant women during pregnancy and up to two months after the birth of the baby.

CHIP Perinatal provides similar coverage for women who can't get Medicaid and don't have health insurance.

To get Medicaid for Pregnant Women or CHIP Perinatal, you must be a Texas resident. You must be a U.S. citizen or qualified non-citizen to get Medicaid for Pregnant Women.
