“They See Me as a Person”: Hugo’s HSNT Story

When Hugo’s mother and sister encouraged him to visit Health Services of North Texas (HSNT) to take control of his health, he felt hesitant and unsure of what to expect after being out of care for so long. That quickly changed when he met Ana Archila, PA-C, and began a new chapter in his health journey.

“I fell in love with HSNT when I got here. I haven’t been to the doctors in a long time… I wanted to get an annual physical done and be on my way. Yet Ana Archila wanted me to have a few follow-up appointments after my first one,” Hugo shares. “It was so different from my other providers. [Ana] was so interested in me as a whole person, not just my health. She asked about my job and how I was doing… When she found out I did construction, she recommended me the tetanus vaccine since I’m exposed to that risk. Feeling safe around our doctors makes it easier to tell them what’s going on with us.”

A 28-year resident of North Texas, Hugo has lived in Dallas, Garland, and Arlington. Over the years, he had seen many providers, but none stood out quite like HSNT.

“You should talk to my mom about her reaction to HSNT helping me with my health! She was so impressed with how good Ana Archila is at her job. In Spanish, we call it a vocación — a calling instead of a career. Plenty of people out there focus on their jobs just for the money… Not Ana Archila,” Hugo recalls. “With her, she helped me change some of the habits I was struggling with and transformed my health. I was dealing with high blood pressure and high cholesterol… Now I’m smoking less and drinking less.”

After his follow-up visits, Hugo felt motivated to continue building healthier habits at home, especially after learning more about nutrition and his personal health journey. “Sugar was a lot more difficult to cut back on than smoking and drinking. With her help, I realized how important it was to slowly wean off things, not just cut them out entirely. I learned it was never about what you specifically eat or drink, it’s about when you abuse it — when things begin to consume you.”

Having worked in construction for 15 years, Hugo understands hard work. Even with a full-time job, affordability was one of his biggest concerns when seeking care, especially without insurance. At HSNT, he found care that was not only accessible for his initial visit, but also for continued follow-ups.

“With HSNT’s price, anyone can come to be seen. More importantly, be seen again for follow-ups. Their visit price helps me come back and make sure I’m staying on top of my health.”

Hugo says his experience with HSNT has not only improved his physical health, but also changed how he views healthcare and providers.

“To anyone thinking about scheduling a visit, give yourself the opportunity to get to know the health center and the team. You’re always welcome here, and that’s what keeps me coming back. They don’t treat me like profit or a number. They’re here to help you with your health.”

As Hugo continues practicing healthier habits, he reflects on the meaningful relationship he’s built with his provider and the care he’s received.

“I want to say thank you to the wonderful team that’s gone above and beyond in my care. The way I take care of myself now… is the way I say thank you to HSNT.”
