When Claudia moved to Denton from Kentucky in 2020, she was searching for a healthcare provider who could support her unique needs. Born with HIV, Claudia has faced a lifetime of challenges that have shaped her spirit and grit. In her search for care, she found Health Services of North Texas (HSNT), where she met Dr. Arlene Hudson.

“Dr. Hudson really cares. She went above and beyond to make sure I had my shots, provided preventative measures, and was always there to support me,” Claudia shares. Describing Dr. Hudson as “the best doctor” she has ever had, Claudia praises her compassionate and comprehensive care. “I feel like [Dr. Hudson] is the message of HSNT where [they provide] quality care.”

Growing up with HIV was not easy for Claudia. Born with the virus, she nearly lost her life at the age of three when her viral load skyrocketed. Her childhood was marked by frequent medical visits and the ever-present fear of stigma. “The stigma made me fearful, and I struggled with how others would react if they knew,” she explains. This fear was compounded by societal misconceptions and a lack of understanding about HIV.

HIV, or Human Immunodeficiency Virus, attacks the body's immune system. If not treated, it can lead to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). However, with modern medical advances, individuals living with HIV can lead long, healthy lives. One of the most significant advancements in HIV care is U=U, or Undetectable = Untransmittable. This principle means that individuals with HIV who maintain an undetectable viral load through treatment cannot transmit the virus to others.

Despite the hurdles Claudia has faced, HSNT has brought many positive changes to her life. The care she receives from Dr. Hudson and the HSNT team has been consistent and reliable, providing her with the support she needs. Claudia emphasizes the importance of accessible healthcare, especially for those with financial constraints. Although Claudia currently has insurance, the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program remains an option for her if needed, and prior to having insurance she used HSNT’s sliding fee scale.

Through HSNT, Claudia has also connected to mental health services and specialized referrals, connecting her to all her health needs. “My health has been well-managed, and I’ve been able to get the care I need without financial stress,” Claudia says.

Looking to the future, Claudia is pursuing her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a focus on juvenile sex offenders. Her goal is to provide compassionate and effective therapy to those in need, driven by her belief in the importance of understanding and rehabilitating individuals who have experienced trauma. “I want to make a difference in the lives of young people who have been through difficult situations. It’s about offering support and understanding,” she explains.

For those unfamiliar with the specifics of HIV, it is essential to understand that HIV is not a death sentence. With the right care and treatment, individuals with HIV can live full and healthy lives. Advancements in treatment, such as antiretroviral therapy (ART), have significantly improved the quality of life for people living with HIV. ART helps keep the viral load low, preventing the progression to AIDS and reducing the risk of transmission.

Furthermore, the stigma surrounding HIV needs to be addressed. Education and awareness are key to breaking down the barriers that people with HIV face. Claudia’s openness about her condition are steps towards this goal. By sharing her story, she hopes to inspire others to seek the care they need and to educate the community about the realities of living with HIV. Her zest for life is evident in her infectious smile and vibrant personality. Whether it's her commitment to her studies or her advocacy efforts, Claudia approaches life with enthusiasm.

She leaves us with this message: “Go get tested. Go get your medical care.”
