Program Update: Enhancing Integrated Behavioral Health Offerings at HSNT

Recently, two of our Family Nurse Practitioners, Lijo Abraham and Nisha Abraham, earned an advanced certification in psychiatric and mental health from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. This additional training equips them to better understand and manage the mental health challenges many of our patients face.

In North Texas, and especially in Denton County, access to mental health care is limited. Many individuals go undiagnosed or are unaware of their mental health needs, leading to untreated conditions like depression and anxiety. Lijo and Nisha’s new skills enable them to better identify these conditions, understand the complexities of psychiatric medications, and make more informed treatment decisions.

Despite this progress, challenges remain. The lack of mental health resources in our community, from affordable medications to specialized counseling services, continues to be a significant barrier. Lijo and Nisha stress the importance of building trust with patients over time, as mental health discussions often require multiple visits.

At HSNT, we are committed to improving mental health care for our patients and advocating for more resources in our community.

"Now we know, we can identify and help our patients sooner—before it becomes a crisis."
