What Are Some Common Newborn Illnesses?

Newborns are particularly vulnerable to illnesses due to their still-developing immune system. As a new parent, it can be overwhelming and frightening to think about your little one becoming sick. However, it's important to educate yourself on newborn illnesses so they can be addressed as soon as possible.

We put together a list of some common newborn illnesses to help parents become more informed. These include jaundice, thrush, respiratory issues, diaper rash, and ear infections.

Jaundice

Jaundice is known to cause a yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes. It occurs when there is too much bilirubin, a yellow pigment found in red blood cells. In newborns, jaundice is common because their liver is not yet fully developed. While mild cases of jaundice resolve by themselves within a few weeks, severe jaundice can lead to brain damage if left untreated.

A pediatrician can monitor your baby's bilirubin levels and recommend treatment such as phototherapy, which involves exposing the newborn to special lights that help break down the excess bilirubin.

Thrush

If you notice small white patches on your baby's tongue, mouth, or cheeks, it could be thrush. This yeast infection can develop if the mother has a yeast infection. Because thrush is contagious, it can cause an ongoing cycle of reinfection between mother and baby if not treated properly.

We recommend seeking medical attention if the thrush does not improve within a short period or if it causes discomfort for your baby during feedings. Treatment for thrush includes antifungal medications, both topical and oral, which are safe for newborns.

Respiratory issues

Newborns are especially susceptible to respiratory issues such as colds, bronchiolitis, and pneumonia. This is because their airways are smaller and more prone to blockages from mucus buildup. Symptoms of respiratory issues include difficulty breathing, rapid breathing, coughing, and wheezing.

If you notice any of these symptoms in your newborn, seek medical attention right away. Our pediatricians in Denton, Plano, and Wylie can address these respiratory issues, in addition to Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), so your baby can recover quickly.

Diaper rash

Many parents have dealt with diaper rash at some point in their baby's life. It occurs when the skin in the diaper area becomes irritated because of prolonged exposure to moisture and bacteria. Diaper rash may also be caused by a yeast or bacterial infection. To prevent and treat diaper rash, make sure to change your baby's diaper frequently, clean the area thoroughly, and use ointments or creams recommended by your pediatrician.

Ear Infections

Sometimes, newborns can develop ear infections due to fluid buildup in the middle ear. This may lead to fever, fussiness, or difficulty sleeping. Pediatricians can diagnose and prescribe antibiotics to treat ear infections. If your baby has recurring ear infections, we may recommend a consultation with a specialist to determine if there are underlying issues.
