Texas summers are no joke – think hotter, longer, and more intense than other areas of the country. According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, a record number of 334 people died from heat-related causes in Texas in 2023. And with summer comes with other risks as well, including blistering sunburns, and accidents on the water. That is why it’s so important to be prepared to take care of your health and the health of your family while enjoying all the fun that summer brings. Keep reading for some key Texas summer safety tips!

Stand Up to the Sun

Protect yourself from the sun’s rays on those bright summer days! Remember to:   

  • Use Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, and reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.  
  • Cover Up: Wear lightweight, long-sleeved clothing and a hat to protect your skin. And remember, sunglasses aren’t just a fashion choice, protect your eyes too!  
  • Treat Sunburns Appropriately: If you do get sunburned, apply aloe vera gel or lotion, stay hydrated, and avoid going out into the sun again until your skin heals. If your sunburn is severe, you may need to see a doctor. 

Beat the Heat

Texas heat is not just uncomfortable, it can be dangerous too. Follow these tips:  

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. You may want to avoid large amounts of caffeine and alcohol, as they can make you more dehydrated.  
  • Stick Close to Cool Spaces: Frequent breaks from activity in an air-conditioned space are your best bet to avoid overheating. If you don’t have access to AC, a shaded area can offer some relief.   
  • Check in With Your Body: Know the symptoms of heat stroke in yourself and others. Symptoms may include mental confusion, dizziness, nausea and/or vomiting, headache, rapid heartbeat, and loss of consciousness. If you suspect heat stroke, call 911 right away and take yourself or the affected person to a cooler area while waiting for medical help.

Stay Aware in the Water

One popular way to beat the Texas heat is to spend some time in the nearest pool or lake. Stay safe while swimming:  

  • Never Go Alone: It’s always best to swim with a buddy in case you end up needing help.  
  • Keep a Close Eye on the Kids: Drowning can happen quickly and silently. Make sure someone always has eyes on children while they are swimming, even if they’re strong swimmers and/or using flotation devices.  
  • Gear-Up: Young children and inexperienced swimmers should wear life jackets when in and around bodies of water, and everyone should wear them while boating. When choosing a life jacket, check that it is US Coast Guard approved.
