Building a Healthier Future with HSNT: Miryan's Story
When Miryan arrived in Denton two years ago, she brought with her a wealth of experience as an architect and urban planner, having worked across Brazil, Africa, Portugal, and the United States. But her life took an unexpected turn after losing both her parents within three months and facing unemployment. During this challenging time, Miryan discovered Health Services of North Texas (HSNT).
Uninsured and deeply concerned about her health, Miryan was determined to prioritize her well-being despite the obstacles. A chance meeting with a staff member at the Denton County Health Department provided her with guidance that led her to HSNT. From her first visit, she was greeted with warmth and professionalism that put her at ease.
“From the beginning, everyone showed extraordinary hospitality, which gave me confidence and peace of mind,” Miryan recalls. HSNT provided her with detailed guidance, including the steps to apply for Medicare and Medicaid. “To this day, I keep the papers [they] gave me because they’ve been instrumental in helping me understand the local healthcare system.”
Miryan’s care experience was further transformed when she met Dr. Gerardo Rodriguez. Still grieving the loss of her parents, Miryan found comfort in Dr. Rodriguez’s compassionate approach. “Finding someone like Dr. Rodriguez, with his sensitivity and understanding, was truly a blessing,” she says. His ability to connect with her, not only as a physician but as someone who spoke her native Portuguese, was a pleasant and unexpected surprise. This combination of empathy, cultural understanding, and medical expertise helped her regain her health and begin healing emotionally.
“It’s inspiring to see how humanized care can make all the difference, transforming not only physical health but also mental and emotional well-being,” she shares.
Since starting her care at HSNT, Miryan has made remarkable strides in her health. Through a balanced diet, regular exercise, and nurturing social connections, she has regained her energy and a renewed sense of purpose. She’s even returned to activities she loves, like swimming, and credits HSNT’s supportive environment for giving her the strength to move forward.
“Finding a welcoming and peaceful environment already makes us feel better,” Miryan reflects. “The positive impact of a team that provides clear guidance and radiates good energy has been incredible for my psychological and physical well-being.”
Miryan understands how difficult it can be to seek care during uncertain times but sees taking that first step as an act of courage and self-love. Her advice to others is simple yet profound: “Seeking help is not a sign of weakness but a demonstration of strength. The benefits of improved quality of life, peace of mind, and a sense of control are worth it.”
Today, Miryan has not only regained her health, but is also passionately pursuing her vision of integrating health and urban planning for beneficiary communities. She aims to create community clinic programs and projects integrated into outdoor activity spaces, impacting community health, and educational and cultural programs to promote community well-being through health awareness in urban spaces.
“HSNT has met my needs with qualified and humanized care,” Miryan says. “Their focus on community health and comprehensive services makes a profound difference.”
