Pediatric Immunizations

Home Services Pediatric Immunizations

Keeping your child healthy is our priority. Child immunizations are a key part of well-child visits and help protect your child from serious and preventable diseases.

At Health Services of North Texas (HSNT), our pediatric teams follow the CDC-recommended immunization schedule and work with families to keep children up to date on vaccines. As a Community Health Center (CHC), we provide immunizations in a caring, supportive environment for families in our community.

Child immunizations are available at our HSNT Denton, Plano and Wylie Children’s Medical Clinics.

Pediatric Immunizations

What Are Child Immunizations?

Immunizations, also called vaccines, help your child’s immune system fight off harmful diseases. Most vaccines begin in infancy and continue through childhood and adolescence.

During well-child visits, your HSNT provider will:

  • Review your child’s immunization record
  • Recommend vaccines based on age and health needs
  • Answer questions and address concerns

Is My Child a Candidate for Vaccines?

Unless your child has a medical condition that prevents vaccination, almost all children can and should receive vaccines.

Vaccines usually begin at birth and continue at regular ages, such as:

  • 2 months
  • 4 months
  • 6 months
  • 12–18 months
  • 4–6 years
  • Annually: Influenza (flu) starting at 6 months
  • Other childhood vaccines are administered based on your child’s health and the need for adolescent booster doses.

Our experienced pediatric team will guide you through the schedule and help make sure your child stays protected.

Benefits of Pediatric Immunizations

Vaccinating your child helps protect both your family and the community. Benefits include:

  • Protection from serious and life-threatening diseases
  • Lower risk of disease spread in schools and childcare settings
  • Long-lasting protection into adulthood
  • High effectiveness in preventing common infections
  • Ability to attend school and participate in vaccine-required activities
  • Very low risk of serious side effects

Immunizations also help protect infants, older adults, and others who may be more vulnerable to illness.

What to Expect During a Vaccination Visit

Please bring any immunization records you have to your child’s appointment. If your child is new to HSNT, we may help you request records from a previous provider.

We understand that getting shots can be stressful. We use a team-based approach during vaccine administration, with nurses supporting one another to ensure each dose is given safely and smoothly. Our pediatric team works to make the visit as comfortable as possible by:

  • Giving vaccines quickly and carefully
  • Using calm explanations and reassurance
  • Offering distraction techniques like deep breathing or conversation

Comfort items such as a favorite toy or blanket are welcome.

After the Vaccines: What to Watch For

After your child’s vaccines, you may go home right away. Mild side effects are common and usually short-term.

You may notice:

  • Soreness or swelling at the injection site
  • Mild fever
  • Fussiness or tiredness

To help your child feel better:

  • Use a cool cloth or ice pack on the injection area
  • Encourage fluids
  • Offer extra comfort and rest

If you have concerns about side effects, please contact HSNT. We are here to help.
