Asthma

Home Services Asthma

Asthma is a common, long-term condition that affects both children and adults. It causes the airways in the lungs to become inflamed, making breathing harder. Symptoms like coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, or shortness of breath can make daily activities, like playing, working, or exercising, more difficult.

Health Services of North Texas (HSNT) offers personalized asthma care to help you or your child breathe more easily. We serve families across North Texas with compassionate, accessible care. HSNT accepts Medicaid, Medicare, most major insurance plans, and offer a sliding fee scale for patients that are uninsured or have costly copays and deductibles.

Asthma

What Is Asthma?

Asthma is a chronic (long-lasting) lung disease. When asthma flares up, the airways become swollen and narrowed. This can cause:

  • Wheezing
  • A tight feeling in the chest
  • Ongoing coughing, especially at night or early in the morning
  • Shortness of breath

Asthma symptoms can come and go. Some people have mild symptoms, while others may experience severe flare-ups that affect their daily lives. With proper treatment and support, asthma can be controlled.

How We Diagnose Asthma

To learn if you or your child has asthma, your HSNT provider will:

  • Review your medical and family history
  • Ask about symptoms, triggers, and how often they occur
Listen to your lungs with a stethoscope
  • Check for signs of breathing problems
  • Perform lung function tests when needed

Common tests may include:

  • Spirometry measures how much air you can breathe in and out
  • Peak flow measurements check lung function changes over time
  • Additional breathing tests based on age or risk

By combining these tools, we can provide an accurate diagnosis and create a care plan that fits your needs.

Asthma Treatment Options

Although asthma cannot be cured, it can be managed with the proper treatment. Our providers will help you or your child:

  • Understand your asthma symptoms and triggers
  • Learn how to use inhalers or other medicines correctly
  • Create an asthma action plan
  • Schedule follow-up visits to monitor symptoms
  • Adjust treatment as needed over time

Children with asthma need special attention, and our team is experienced in caring for young patients. If you think your child is showing signs of asthma, an asthma screening is the first step.
